Community Engagement

As a way to give back to the community, I initiate community projects that offer people the opportunity to engage in creative outreach activities, and empower communities with arts, culture and ways to appreciate diversity.

Subway Therapy Boston

I started this project as a way to move past the negativity stemming from the 2016 US presidential election, and to rally the community with a positive outlook for the world. Subway Therapy Boston was held at the Park Street and Harvard Square Stations in November 2016 and received wide-spread coverage and feedback. We received over 3000 post-its in eight hours with messages of love to the community.

Fire Walk for Charity

The RAG Firewalk was a fundraising event where 30 'firewalkers' including myself, walked on 30 feet of burning hot coal to raise awareness and funds for Anti-Slavery. Through the event, we raised £2715.17 while challenging ourselves to a genuinely thrilling and barrier-breaking experience..All participants underwent training before the event and completed the walk with nothing more than a few minor blisters!

Culture in Focus - Storytelling through Photography

I initiated 'Culture in Focus' with the goal of celebrating cultural diversity and to give emerging photographers the opportunity to showcase their skills while telling their unique stories, visually. Participants were invited to send in one photograph of what culture means to them in order to enter the competition. The winning entry won a cash price that was funded by the University of Leeds. The best photographs from the competition was then exhibited for more people to see. The event was an amalgamation of digital and in-person community engagement and was hugely successful.

Interested in collaborating on community engagement projects? I'd love to hear from you and brainstorm for ways we (as designers and artists) can create a positive impact in our communities.
